Back when I reviewed the Nexus 7, I mentioned that I was disappointed with Chrome for Android. It often felt slow, would hang, and typing in the address bar and input fields on webpages would lag. Scrolling wasn't always optimal, and sometimes, it would simply freeze up altogether. We're several months down the line now - has the situation improved for me? 5??Read More ? 32 Comment(s)
Imagination Tech buys MIPS Linked by Thom Holwerda on 11/06/12 23:35 UTC The desktop and laptop world is dominated by x86, the mobile/embedded world by ARM. Conventional wisdom, right? Not really. There's also MIPS - hundreds of millions of embedded devices run on MIPS, and for years now, the architecture has been trying to break into the mobile world dominated so much by ARM. They just a got a boost: MIPS has been acquired by Imagination Tech, most known for its PowerVR graphics chips used in a lot of smartphones and tablets. 6??Read More ? 39 Comment(s)
Google unveils Nexus 4, Nexus 10, Android 4.2 Linked by Thom Holwerda on 10/29/12 18:14 UTC While Microsoft is unveiling all about Windows Phone 8, Google ruined the party a little bit by 'leaking' all about Android 4.2, the Nexus 10 tablet, and the new Nexus phone, the LG Nexus 4. There's some pretty awesome stuff in here from Google - except for the fact the devices themselves are kind of ugly. 4??Read More ? 107 Comment(s)
A niche use case for on-screen keyboards Linked by Thom Holwerda on 10/25/12 14:52 UTC When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone, one of its most prominent and most controversial features was the on-screen keyboard. In as world dominated by devices with physical keyboards, it was seen as a joke, something that could never work. We know better by now, of course, but while I still prefer the physical feel and clicks of a real keyboard, a recent new endeavour of mine has made me appreciate the on-screen keyboard in a whole new way. 6??Read More ? 60 Comment(s)
Apple unveils iPad mini Linked by Thom Holwerda on 10/23/12 19:12 UTC It's one of those days again: Apple held a product announcement today, announcing several new products. The most important of which was rumoured about for a long time now: a smaller iPad. It's called the iPad mini, and has the potential to become the best-selling iPad - and thus, the best selling tablet. 1??Read More ? 108 Comment(s)

Windows RT+Office RT takes up 12GB disk space Linked by Thom Holwerda on 10/19/12 20:07 UTC Interesting little tidbit from the Reddit AMA session with Microsoft's Surface team. One Redditor wondered just how much disk space Windows RT takes up - in other words, if you buy the 32GB Surface RT tablet, how much space is left for your stuff? It turns out that while Windows 8 RT is considerably smaller than its Windows 7 x86 predecessor, it's still huge by mobile standards. 1??Read More ? 67 Comment(s)
Google-led Motorola phone still months away
Linked by on 10/18/12 22:02 UTC
This has always bothered me. Google buys a huge hardware company called Motorola, and people expect new Google phones to appear within a few weeks or months. Of course, anybody with more than two brain cells to rub together realises buying and integrating such a huge company isn't something you just do in a few weeks or months. Luckily, The Verge reports Google has just stated the obvious. 2??Read More ? 16 Comment(s)Surface RT pricing revealed: $499 Linked by Thom Holwerda on 10/16/12 12:14 UTC After yesterday's TV advertisement, Microsoft finally unveiled the pricing for its Surface tablet - the ARM Windows RT version that is. The cheapest Surface - 32GB without touch cover - will set you back $499. They're aiming straight for iPad pricing here, ignoring the popular cheaper Android offerings. Update: only available in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States. As usual. 4??Read More ? 140 Comment(s)
The story of Nokia's Maemo and MeeGo Linked by Thom Holwerda on 10/11/12 21:41 UTC It's a long read - but totally and utterly worth it. After interviewing ten former and current Nokia employees, and combining their insider information with publicly available information, Sampsa Kurri has written a long and detailed article about the history of Maemo and MeeGo within Nokia, and everything that went wrong - which is a lot. It's sad tale, one that reads almost like a manual on how to not run a large company. Still, between the bad decisions and frustrations, there's a red thread of hope that leads to Jolla. 11??Read More ? 57 Comment(s)
