Businesses need to plan for disaster | e2benterprise Blog

Small businesses these days are adopting accounting business software, ERP business programs and more, but the benefits of these solutions could be erased if businesses are not prepared for contingencies. CPA Practice Advisor said many companies are still using programs installed on their own computers or servers, thereby exposing them to lost data.

The Sage Small Business Disaster Preparedness Study shows that 94 percent of respondents do back up their financial data, but only 38 percent have a formal disaster preparedness plan. Given how much important information is in these programs, this is not a wise move by these companies.

"Backing up on-site may not be sufficient to protect small businesses from natural disasters ? particularly if the business is located in an area prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, fires or flooding," said Connie Certusi, executive vice president and general manager of Sage Small Business Accounting Solutions. "Data loss could have a serious impact on operations and crisis recovery. The development of a preparedness plan that includes solutions for protecting critical information, such as backing up off-site, could be the difference between getting a business on its way to recovery and worrying about its survival."

Businesses that use accounting business software and other new technology need to make sure they are not taking data security for granted.
