Overcoming Bias : Good friends can make bad business partners

A new?NBER working paper?suggests that similar venture capitalists (VCs) are worse at making or managing?shared investments:

This paper explores two broad questions on collaboration between individuals. First, we investigate what personal characteristics affect people?s desire to work together. Second, given the influence of these personal characteristics, we analyze whether this attraction enhances or detracts from performance. Addressing these problems in the venture capital syndication setting, we show that venture capitalists exhibit strong detrimental homophily in their co-investment decisions. We find that individual venture capitalists choose to collaborate with other venture capitalists for both ability-based characteristics (e.g., whether both individuals in a dyad obtained a degree from a top university) and affinity-based characteristics (e.g., whether individuals in a pair share the same ethnic background, attended the same school, or worked for the same employer previously). Moreover, frequent collaborators in syndication are those venture capitalists who display a high level of mutual affinity.?We find that while collaborating for ability-based characteristics enhances investment performance, collaborating for affinity-based characteristics dramatically reduces the probability of investment success. A variety of tests show that the cost of affinity is not driven by selection into inferior deals; the effect is most likely attributable to poor decision-making by high-affinity syndicates post investment. Taken together, our results suggest that non-ability-based ?birds-of-a-feather-flock-together? effects in collaboration can be costly.

Given that homophily rather than heterophily remains the norm, it seems these investors are not learning this lesson, or value working and affiliating with similar peers over maximising profits. All very well for them. But if you have a project that you truly want to succeed, you may be better off doing it with a talented stranger rather than the college mates you clicked with on day one. And if you are letting others invest on your behalf, you should beware of handing your money over to a homogeneous friendship group.

I wonder if this kind of research influences the institutional investors who often fund VCs? If not, it would suggest that even this highly competitive investment market is falling short of its potential to fund and grow promising new companies.

Some research?suggests that corporations with more female board members perform better, though the?direction of causality?is disputed. I doubt females are innately more talented board members, so the causation, if real, could be the result of female ?outsiders? generating better management than a clique of natural friends. Shareholders don?t share the benefits of board members enjoying each other?s company, so?if they had effective control of ?the companies they owned you might expect then to appoint a diverse ?team of rivals? to the board to closely scrutinise one another?s ideas. ?My impression is that precisely the opposite is the norm.

There's not a lot of specifics to be had on this one just yet, but BMW and Toyota have inked a new deal that will see them collaborate on far more than the batteries they've already agreed to work on together. According to the automakers, the new arrangement will see them focus on four key areas: a fuel cell system, powertrain electrification, lightweight technologies and, last but not least, joint development of the "architecture and components for a future sports vehicle." Unfortunately, neither party is offering much indication about the types of vehicles we might see as a result. BMW's Norbert Reithofer said only that the goal of the partnership is to "further strengthen our competitive position in sustainable future technologies," while Toyota's Akio Toyoda notes that "BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars," and that he's "excited to think of the cars that will result from this relationship."

New compound holds promise for treating Duchenne MD, other inherited diseases

Scientists at UCLA have identified a new compound that could treat certain types of genetic disorders in muscles. It is a big first step in what they hope will lead to human clinical trials for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy, or DMD, is a degenerative muscle disease that affects boys almost exclusively. It involves the progressive degeneration of voluntary and cardiac muscles, severely limiting the life span of sufferers.

In a new study, senior author Carmen Bertoni, an assistant professor in the UCLA Department of Neurology, first author Refik Kayali, a postgraduate fellow in Bertoni's lab, and their colleagues demonstrate the efficacy of a new compound known as RTC13, which suppresses so-called "nonsense" mutations in a mouse model of DMD.

The findings appear in the current online edition of the journal Human Molecular Genetics.

"We are excited about these new findings because they represent a major step toward the development of a drug that could potentially treat this devastating disease in humans," Bertoni said. "We knew that the compounds were effective in cells isolated from the mouse model for DMD, but we did not know how they would behave when administered in a living organism."

Nonsense mutations are generally caused by a single change in DNA that disrupts the normal cascade of events that changes a gene into messenger RNA, then into a protein. The result is a non-functioning protein. Approximately 13 percent of genetic defects known to cause diseases are due to such mutations. In the case of DMD, the "missing" protein is called dystrophin.

For the study, Bertoni and Kayali collaborated with the laboratory of Dr. Richard Gatti, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and of human genetics at UCLA. Working with the UCLA Molecular Shared Screening Resource facility at the campus's California NanoSystems Institute, the Gatti lab screened some 35,000 small molecules in the search for new compounds that could ignore nonsense mutations. Two were identified as promising candidates: RTC13 and RTC14.

The Bertoni lab tested RTC13 and RTC14 in a mouse model of DMD carrying a nonsense mutation in the dystrophin gene. While RTC14 was not found to be effective, RTC13 was able to restore significant amounts of dystrophin protein, making the compound a promising drug candidate for DMD. When RTC13 was administered to mice for five weeks, the investigators found that the compound partially restored full-length dystrophin, which resulted in a significant improvement in muscle strength. The loss of muscle strength is a hallmark of DMD.

The researchers also compared the level of dystrophin achieved to the levels seen with another experimental compound, PTC124, which has proved disappointing in clinical trials; RTC13 was found to be more effective in promoting dystrophin expression. Just as important, Bertoni noted, the study found that RTC13 was well tolerated in animals, which suggests it may also be safe to use in humans.

The next step in the research is to test whether an oral formulation of the compound would be effective in achieving therapeutically relevant amounts of dystrophin protein. If so, planning can then begin for clinical testing in patients and for expanding these studies to other diseases that may benefit from this new drug.

?I personally think we should have a franchise in London and that is something I am going to push for,? Kraft said, according to SkySports.com. ?I think I said that the last time we were over here in 2009 and before this next decade is out, I hope we have a team here. I think that would be right for the NFL and this fan base has proven they deserve it.?

Kraft however was adamant that the NFL based team in England, would not be the one from New England. He did however say they?d be interested in participating in a game annually in London until they have their own NFL Franchise.

?We lobbied hard to come back after having such a good experience in 2009. We would love to be the permanent visiting team. It was good for team bonding and everyone really enjoyed our last trip to London,? he said, before noting the support the Patriots receive from their growing UK fan base.

Robert Kraft at one point was rumored to be a potential investor in the English soccer team Liverpool, before it was eventually sold to Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks. Kraft told BBC??Liverpool is a great brand and it?s something our family respects a lot. We?re always interested in opportunities and growing, so you never know what can happen.??The team was then sold to New England Sports Venture, the group that owns the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Ballpark.

The Patriots and the Rams will square off at Wembley Stadium on October 28th.

Harkless (6-8, 208) was named Big East Rookie of the Year after averaging 15.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.4 blocks while shooting 45.2% from the floor. ?He ranked sixth in the nation in scoring among freshman and second in rebounding.

The freshman started all 32 games for the Red Storm last season, scoring in double-figures 26 times, including seven games with 20-plus points. ?Harkless had a career-high 32 points on 14-of-17 shooting vs. Providence and tallied 30 points and 13 rebounds at Duke. ?Overall, he recorded 11 double-doubles.

Harkless, who turned 19 last month, is from New York City and spent his senior year of high school at South Kent in Connecticut . ?As a senior, he averaged 27.2 points, 13.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 3.1 blocks and 1.6 steals. ?Harkless earned Most Valuable Player honors at the 2011 Kobe Bryant Classic held in Philadelphia.

There are so many variations and denominations of the church, that it is pert near impossible to keep up with all of them. All now having their own bibles and their own beliefs and their own ways. It does not matter what name that you wish to be called, being Roman Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah Witness, Presbyterian, Mormon, Mennonite, Amish, so on and so forth, it is the laws and commandments of the Lord thy God that we all are supposed to be obeying every moment of each and every day and loving God and each other with all of our hearts, minds, and souls.

There seems to be a widespread notion that commercial real estate owners are void of emotion, focused strictly on business with their only goal to make money regardless of the preferences of others. While this may be true in some instances, it is not the philosophy of all, and it certainly is not the most productive approach to commercial real estate investment.

So what are?the keys to success?

Success Key #1 ? Show and Earn Respect

We have all heard that location (in triplicate) is the most important factor when referring to real estate, but what about people? People make the decisions, people occupy buildings, and people pay rent. It is true that location is very important, but so are people. Tenants are people, to state the obvious, and like all others, they have needs and preferences.

The landlord who meets these needs is the one who will be successful in leasing space. When a landlord leases space to a tenant, the real estate is considered to be an investment property or income-producing property. This type of investing is a relatively simple concept. To generate a profit, the property has to generate enough income to exceed the building expenses. Income is primarily generated through leasing (renting) space to tenants. The object is to keep tenants in the property paying rent, because vacancy is a direct loss of the primary source of income. So success key #1 is to treat the tenant with respect so they will be more willing to lease your space.

Success Key #2 ? Define Needs

A landlord who keeps buildings occupied and generating income has successfully found the link to meeting tenants? needs, as there is a direct correlation in this equation. This is done by building relationships through communication and understanding. ?A good landlord is willing to listen to their tenants and work together with them to find mutually agreeable outcomes. The primary objective of the property owner should be to define each prospective tenant?s requirements and the priorities of those requirements. Of course, rent will be a primary concern; however, rental rates are driven by the supply and demand of the market and relatively consistent across competitive properties. So as long as the landlord charges a market rate, other factors will determine where a tenant leases space. That is why it is important for a property owner to get to know their customers. By asking questions and getting to know the tenant, a landlord can often discover the hot buttons that determine the outcome of the tenants? leasing decisions. There are many factors that come into play when leasing commercial real estate ? parking, accessibility, visibility, signage, co-tenancy, building construction, functionality, efficiency, utilities, amenities ? and the list goes on.? If a landlord can discover the factors that are most important and work with the tenant to meet those needs, they will be successful in leasing space.

Success Key #3 ? Develop a Good Working Relationship and Establish Trust

A good working relationship is even more important in retaining tenants. Tenants remember how they are treated. When a property owner listens to their tenants and does what they can to meet their requests, relationships are strengthened. In turn, if a property owner ignores the tenants? concerns, this factor will be remembered when time to renew, or not renew, a lease. Simply put, if a tenant feels they are being treated fairly and can trust their landlord, they will be much more likely to stay.

Success Key #4 ? Appreciate the Broker?s Role

In commercial real estate, a large percentage of leasing transactions involve real estate brokers. Guess what ? they are people, too! They remember their experiences with property owners, and they communicate with potential tenants as well as other real estate agents. Not only is important for the property owner to treat tenants fairly, they should be equally fair to the brokers involved in transactions. Real estate brokers may represent tenants and/or property owners and are an integral part of the leasing process. Therefore it is very important to establish strong relationships with them, too. It?s likely that they will be involved in another transaction in the future, either directly or indirectly.

The Bottom Line

Fairness, understanding, and earning trust are qualities that separate successful commercial real estate investors from underperforming owners. If a property owner is inflexible and unreasonable, tenants will go somewhere else. Good people make good landlords, just as good people make good tenants and real estate brokers. Personal relationships are an imperative part of leasing, and building trustworthy relationships is an invaluable key to success. ?Location, location, location? may be the most common adage in real estate; however, ?people, people, people? is the most important in successfully leasing, representing, or owning commercial real estate. ?

Your Lead Generation Team's Productivity and Conversions Need to ...

In recent posts, I?ve given advice about ways of maintaing accountability within your sales organization, and more specifically as it pertains to your lead generation function. This week, I?m going to continue with that trend, because each week it becomes more clear that those teams that expose their lead qualification reps? daily performance to management (and obviously one another on the team), are far more productive and ultimately successful than those who only expose it maybe once a week, month, or quarter.

I?ve seen some lead gen teams (including the company in the portfolio that I worked for a couple years back) actually require an end-of-day email update coming directly from the lead gen rep. In my case, the update included number of calls made, number of conversations had, demos set, and a quick synopsis of the conversations that resulted in demos, as well as any impediments that held me back that day. The end-of-day report took me about 15-20 minutes to write (depending on the demos set, and the amount of detail pertaining to those conversations that I wrote), and I sent it to both the venture partners at OpenView as well as the management team at the portfolio company, including the CEO. There were some days that I felt it was burden (particularly on those days when I didn?t have anything too wonderful to report), but at the end of the day, it kept me incredibly accountable to what I committed to when I accepted the job offer, and you better believe that I kept myself incredibly organized and highly productive each and everyday to make my end-of-day report as impressive as possible.

Plus, there was honestly NOTHING better than having a great day and getting a reply-all from the CEO telling me ?Great job today!? Or even having a day when I didn?t set any demos but left 50 voicemails and felt mentally exhausted, but still had a venture partners say ? ?Keep your head up, the demos will come with that type of activity!?

Don?t want your rep spending the last chunk of the day writing out this kind of report? Hey, it?s not for everyone or every manager. In fact, there is another great option. Have an automated email sent every evening coming from Salesforce.com (or whatever CRM you are using while wishing you are on Salesforce) that pulls your team?s daily productivity dashboard. If you are slick, you can also have your messaging dashboard sent to management and marketing (I discuss the messaging dashboard in this post).

If you?ve hired competitive, hardworking, and driven individuals this end-of-day update will be on their mind and keep them focused. ?Hmm?I could watch this 10-minute long YouTube video that my friend sent me, but it?s 3pm and I?ve only made 20 calls, had 3 conversations, and set no demos today ? maybe I should watch it later.?

You might be reading this and thinking ? wow, Devon seems a little OCD. Hey, I?ve heard worse. But, let?s be serious. Outbound lead qualification is a VERY expensive form of marketing for your business, and there are a LOT of distractions that could pull your team away from being productive. I?m assuming that you, as the manager, are juggling 100 balls because you are working at an expansion-stage organization. Why not find some simple ways to keep accountability high so that you don?t have to be breathing down everyone?s neck everyday? Let these updates push your reps to better manage themselves.

Do you have a rep who is really turned off by an end-of-day report (handcrafted or automated)? First of all, that?s a red flag. What does he/she have to hide?! Second of all, for a relatively junior role within the organization (and I?m not saying entry level ? because in most cases, 2-4 years experience is IDEAL for this role), honestly, what other opportunity do you get to have exposure to senior management and have them observing your hard work, commitment, drive and passion? I honestly believe that if I wasn?t sending my personal daily report as a lead qualifier a couple years back, I wouldn?t have received the promotion that I did after 6 months on the job because I wouldn?t have had that level of exposure to senior management!

Dell outs XPS 14 with optional mobile broadband, XPS 15 with Kepler graphics

Dell's XPS 13 Ultrabook has been rather lonely since it launched in early 2012, but the company is introducing two new laptops to round out the updated XPS line. Today it announced the 14-inch XPS 14 and the 15-inch XPS 15, both of which feature the same aluminum chassis as the XPS 13 and run Core i5 or Core i7 Ivy Bridge processors.

The XPS 14 Ultrabook will be available in two configurations, both of which include a backlit keyboard and a 400-nit, 1600 x 900 display. The main difference between the two models is connectivity: the higher-end XPS 14 comes with integrated mobile broadband and uses Dell's NetReady "pay as you go" service to get online when Wi-Fi is out of range. Both versions come with up to 8GB of RAM and can be configured with a 500GB drive spinning at 5,400 RPM paired with a 32GB SSD or a standalone 512GB SSD, and the WWAN model comes standard with a 500GB drive with a free fall sensor on board. Another difference is graphics: the base model ships with Intel HD Graphics 4000, while the WWAN model offers an NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M GPU. Dell claims the notebook provides up to 11 hours of runtime, "the longest battery life of any Ultrabook." The XPS 14 starts at $1,099 and is available today. Next up is the XPS 15, which weighs 5.79 pounds and sports a 1920 x 1080 Corning Gorilla Glass display. The laptop includes either a DVD-RW or Blu-Ray drive and comes with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. As far as graphics go, you get a choice of NVIDIA's GeForce GT 630M chip with 1GB of dedicated memory or GeForce GT 640M graphics with 2GB of RAM. Rewriting quantum chips with a beam of light: Laser technique brings ultrafast computing closer to reality

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? The promise of ultrafast quantum computing has moved a step closer to reality with a technique to create rewritable computer chips using a beam of light. Researchers from The City College of New York (CCNY) and the University of California Berkeley (UCB) used light to control the spin of an atom's nucleus in order to encode information.

The technique could pave the way for quantum computing, a long-sought leap forward toward computers with processing speeds many times faster than today's. The group will publish their results on June 26 in Nature Communications.

Current electronic devices are approaching the upper limits in processing speed, and they rely on etching a pattern into a semiconductor to create a chip or integrated circuit. These patterns of interconnections serve as highways to shuttle information around the circuit, but there is a drawback.

"Once the chip is printed, it can only be used one way," explained Dr. Jeffrey Reimer, UCB professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and the study co-author.

The team -- including CCNY Professor of Physics Carlos Meriles and PhD graduate students Jonathan King of UCB and Yunpu Li of CCNY- saw a remedy for these problems in the emerging sciences of spintronics and quantum computing.

They have developed a technique to use laser light to pattern the alignment of "spin" within atoms so that the pattern can be rewritten on the fly. Such a technique may one day lead to rewritable spintronic circuits.

Digital electronics and conventional computing rely on translating electrical charges into the zeros and ones of binary code. A "spintronics" computer, on the other hand, would use the quantum property of electron spin, which enables the electron to store any number between zero and one.

Imagine this as if the electron were a "yin-yang" symbol in which the proportions of the dark and light areas -- representing values from zero to one -- could vary at will. This would mean that multiple computations could be done simultaneously, which would amp up processing power.

Attempts at using electrons for quantum computing have been plagued, however, by the fact that electron spins switch back and forth rapidly. Thus, they make very unstable vehicles to hold information. To suppress the random switching back and forth of electrons, the UCB and CCNY researchers used laser light to produce long-lasting nuclear spin "magnets" that can pull, push, or stabilize the spins of the electrons.

They did this by illuminating a sample of gallium arsenide -- the same semiconductor used in cell phone chips -- with a pattern of light, much as lithography etches a physical pattern onto a traditional integrated circuit. The illuminated pattern aligned the spins of all the atomic nuclei, and, thus, their electrons, at once, creating a spintronic circuit.

"What you could have is a chip you can erase and rewrite on the fly with just the use of a light beam," said Professor Meriles. Changing the pattern of light altered the layout of the circuit instantly.

"If you can actually rewrite with a beam of light and alter this pattern, you can make the circuit morph to adapt to different requirements," he added. "Imagine what you can make a system like that do for you!"

Nano-sandwich technique slims down solar cells, improves efficiency

Researchers from North Carolina State University have found a way to create much slimmer thin-film solar cells without sacrificing the cells' ability to absorb solar energy. Making the cells thinner should significantly decrease manufacturing costs for the technology.

"We were able to create solar cells using a 'nanoscale sandwich' design with an ultra-thin 'active' layer," says Dr. Linyou Cao, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research. "For example, we created a solar cell with an active layer of amorphous silicon that is only 70 nanometers (nm) thick.
