Police investigate Best Buy TV porn

Police are now investigating how porn infiltrated one Best Buy store's Wi-Fi network, forcing the store to issue an apology to shocked customers.
The last thing a family browsing in the TV section at its local Best Buy in Greenville, S.C., expected to see is 55-inches of pornographic images, but that's what happened earlier this week to a woman in the store shopping with her son and grandchildren. She filed a complaint with the Greenville Police Department.
And that's not the only time it happened, as the store's manager admitted it had happened the night before the woman reported her incident. An image was apparently uploaded through the Wi-Fi network and uploaded to a smart TV.
NBC affiliate WECT reported on the apology issued by the chain's corporate office:
"Two individuals accessed our store's wireless signal to broadcast inappropriate content on a smart television display. In both cases, we worked immediately to disable the inappropriate content. We greatly apologize for this unfortunate incident and we are working to ensure that it does not happen again."
UPDATE (9:37 a.m.) -- We reached out to the Greenville Police Department, and Officer Alia Urps told us that they're going through footage from in-store cameras to see who was there those evenings. Police suspect someone using a tablet or other mobile device streamed the image to the smart TV. But because there is no hard drive on the TV, it didn't ?save the offending material.
Officer Urps said that even if they were to find the culprit, "It would be difficult to prove the person sent that particular image." The charge would be disseminating obscene material.
"This is something we?ve not seen before," Urps said. "It'll be good for us to figure out what to do with this one. It'll serve as a foundation for further incidents."

A team coordinated by Mathias Pessiglione, Inserm researcher at the ?Centre de recherche en neurosciences de la Piti? Salp?tri?re? (Inserm/UPMC-Universit? Pierre and Marie Curie/CNRS) have identified the part of the brain driving motivation during actions that combine physical and mental effort: the ventral striatum. The results of their study were published in PLoS Biology on 21 February 2012.
The results of an activity (physical or mental) partly depend on the efforts devoted to it, which may be incentive-motivated. For example, a sportsperson is likely to train with "increased intensity" if the result will bring social prestige or financial gain. The same can be said for students who study for their exams with the objective of succeeding in their professional career. What happens when physical and mental efforts are required to reach an objective?
Mathias Pessiglione and his team from Inserm unit 975 "Centre de recherche en neurosciences de la Piti?-Salp?tri?re" examined whether mental and physical efforts are driven by a motivation 'centre' or whether they are conducted by different parts of the brain. The researchers studied the neural mechanisms resulting from activities that combine both action and cognition.
To this end, a series of 360 tests, combining mental and physical effort, were performed whilst being monitored by a scanner. The 20 voluntary participants were placed in the supine position, with their heads in a functional MRI scanner. They then had to complete a series of tasks through which they could accumulate winnings. However, in each series the winnings were limited to the first incorrect response. The tasks combined cognitive and motor actions. The participants had to find the highest number from among different-sized numbers and then select it by squeezing a handle located by their left or right hand (depending on the number's location). At the end of the test, a winnings summary was displayed to motivate the participant.
Using images obtained from the MRI scans taken during the test, Mathias Pessiglione and his team identified a general motivational system in the depths of the brain, i.e. a structure capable of activating any effort type, both mental (concentrating on the task in hand) or physical (lifting a load). The researchers observed that the ventral striatum was activated in proportion to the amount of money involved: the higher the degree of motivation, the higher the activation level. Furthermore, the ventral striatum is connected to the median part of the striatum (the caudate nucleus) when the task to be performed is cognitively difficult (when the physical size and the numerical value of the numbers did not correspond). This ventral region solicits the lateral part of the striatum (the putamen) when the difficulty is motor-related (when the handle had to be squeezed very tightly).
The researchers suggest that the expectation of a reward is encoded in the ventral striatum, which can then drive either the motor or cognitive part of the striatum, depending on the task, in order to boost performance. "The ventral striatum may commute connections in accordance with the request, i.e. enhance the neuronal activity in the caudate nucleus for a cognitive operation and in the putamen for a physical action" explains Mathias Pessiglione.

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) ? Rory McIlroy made his pro debut in America, a 19-year-old from Northern Ireland identified by his freckles, the brown curls coming out of his cap and his raw talent.
He reached the quarterfinals of the Match Play Championship until he ran into the eventual champion, Geoff Ogilvy, who had to make five birdies on the back nine to hold off the kid. Ogilvy birdied the last three holes and won only one of them, the 17th, for a 2-and-1 win.
"He's the real deal," Ogilvy said that day. "He's going to be around for a while."
That was three years ago.
McIlroy returns to Dove Mountain as the reigning U.S. Open champion after smashing records at Congressional. He is No. 2 in the world and has a chance to become the second-youngest player to reach the top of the ranking if he were to win this week.
He is dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. He already has switched managers. And he plans to play a full PGA Tour schedule. It's hard to believe he has gone through so much at such a young age.
"I feel very content and very happy at the moment with everything that's going on," he said. "I feel like my golf game is in good shape."
Just don't get the idea he's comfortable with everything.
After all, this is the Match Play Championship. There are 64 players in the single-elimination tournament, such a quirky event that not even the best can make plans to stick around Dove Mountain for more than one day.
Tiger Woods is a three-time winner of this World Golf Championship, and if he takes any motivation from the assessment of his opponent, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, he isn't saying.
"I think he's beatable," the Spaniard said. "Of course, I have to play good."
Such comments were all Woods used to need to get fired up. The most famous incident took place in 2006 at La Costa, when Stephen Ames as the No. 64 seed said anything could happen, adding with a smile, "especially where he's hitting it."
Woods beat him, 9 and 8, the most lopsided-match in the history of this event.
But that was when Woods was No. 1 in the world. He is the No. 19 seed this week at Dove Mountain.
That was when Woods was winning two majors a year. Now he hasn't won a tour event in more than two years. Hearing these comments on Tuesday when he arrived at Dove Mountain, he smiled.
"I feel exactly the same way as he does," Woods said. "I feel he's beatable, too."
Then again, that goes for all 64 players in the field.
McIlroy hasn't made it out of the second round the last two years. Lee Westwood, the No. 3 player, who also has a chance to topple Luke Donald at No. 1 in the world this week, has never made it out of the second round.
"It's not quite happened for me," Westwood said. "I suppose I'm a fairly steady to slow starter to the tournament. I ease my way into it, which you can generally do in stroke-play events. But in this, if you come out slow and shoot 1 over for the front nine, you could find yourself three or four down and only have four holes to recover."
It all gets under way on Wednesday at Dove Mountain, with Donald as the top seed and the prime example why no one can count on anything this week.
His opponent? The No. 64 seed, Ernie Els, a three-time major champion and seven-time winner of the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth, where the matches are contested over 36 holes instead of the 18-hole sprints in Arizona.
Not since the inaugural Match Play Championship in 1999 has No. 1 against No. 64 featured such big stars, when Woods beat Nick Faldo.
Of course, there's a reason Els comes in as the No. 64 seed.
The Big Easy hasn't won since the South African Open at the end of 2010, and he only got into this tournament because Phil Mickelson is taking a family vacation (Paul Casey later withdrew with injury).
Donald is coming off a year in which he won money titles on the PGA Tour and European Tour, and won a career-high four tournaments, starting with the Match Play Championship.
Donald was so dominant at Dove Mountain last year that he never played the 18th hole all week in competition.
"He had an unbelievable year last year, and becoming world No. 1. So he's got a lot going for him," Els said. "It's 18 holes, you know? It's not like I'm the worst match-play player in the world, either. I think I know what I need to do. You've got to keep the ball in play. You've got to keep it in play on every single hole, because he's going to be in every hole."
McIlroy takes on George Coetzee, who is playing for the first time ever in America as a pro. Coetzee got in when Casey's shoulder injury from snowboarding was not fully healed. Westwood plays Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium. Martin Kaymer, who lost in the championship match to Donald a year ago, is the No. 4 seed and opens with Greg Chalmers of Australia.
No one knows how long they will stay. The smart players don't even bother looking ahead in the bracket to see whom they might face in the next round. Ben Crane opens with Bubba Watson, interesting in that their caddies are sharing a room this week. One of them will be checking out Wednesday afternoon.
"If you get on a roll and you play well, you can run the tables here," said Steve Stricker, who did just that in 2001 as the No. 55 seed.
"I don't think it really matters where you come from, to tell you the truth," he said. "They're all good players. There are 64 good players here, and they deserve to be here. They've shown that they've played well over the last year to be within that top 64. So you need to play well, just because everybody is good."

The HTC Endeavor HTC One X has appeared in numerous leaks over the past few months. We first saw an early render of the device back in November (back then it was the HTC Edge), though it's likely the final product will look different. Over the weekend, a leaked RUU (ROM Update Utility) for the phone revealed a massive cache of screenshots, along with the full list of specifications. The phone is reportedly powered by a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, with 1GB of RAM and a 720p screen.
The One S looks set to become HTC's mid-range offering for 2012, with a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a qHD screen. We've seen it in a series of leaks over the past month or so, which has given us some early photos and video of the device in action.
On the software side, both phones run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, along with the new HTC Sense 4.0, which seems to be shaping up rather nicely. There'll probably be at least one other quad-core phone at MWC, but we're looking forward to getting our hands on HTC's latest piece of kit regardless.

The pleasant surprise came a day after online coupon distributor Groupon Inc. raised investor doubts about young, rapidly growing Internet companies by announcing an unexpected fourth-quarter loss.
LinkedIn's numbers seemed to lift spirits; the company's stock surged more than 8 percent late Thursday.
The ebullient reaction may bode well for an upcoming IPO from Facebook Inc., which has built an online network of 845 million users by focusing on family and friendships instead of career advancement. Facebook filed papers last week for an initial public offering of stock. It's expected to be completed in May or June. The IPO is expected to value Facebook at $75 billion to $100 billion.
LinkedIn, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., has emerged as one of the stars from last year's crop of Internet IPOs. During the first nine months of trading, its stock has remained well above its IPO price of $45 and is moving upward again. The stock rose $6.44, or 8.4 percent, to $82.83 in extended trading Thursday after the release of results.
LinkedIn earned $6.9 million, or 6 cents per share, during the final three months of last year. In 2010, the company had income of $1.6 million, or 3 cents per share. It's not directly comparable because LinkedIn's outstanding shares have ballooned since its IPO in May. Before figuring the net income credited to shareholders, LinkedIn's net income for the latest quarter increased 30 percent from $5.3 million
If not for certain accounting items unrelated to its ongoing business, LinkedIn said it would have earned 12 cents in the fourth quarter. That figure topped the average estimate of 7 cents per share among analysts polled by FactSet.
Revenue more than doubled from the previous year to nearly $168 million ? about $8 million above analyst estimates.
Management's projections for the first quarter and full year also called for revenue above analyst forecasts.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Outmatched time and again at the polls by President Hugo Chavez, Venezuelan's opposition leaders are trying a new strategy to unseat the populist leader this year, holding the nation's first presidential primary to choose the strongest challenger.
The front-runner in Sunday's election is Henrique Capriles, a 39-year-old state governor who has won a large following as a youthful alternative to the 57-year-old Chavez. Capriles, an avid jogger who plays pickup basketball games with supporters, has crowd appeal that makes him a formidable adversary.
Sometimes wearing a baseball hat emblazoned with the yellow, blue and red stripes of Venezuela's flag, Capriles has pledged both to help the poor and be a friend to business. He describes himself as a center-left progressive, saying he admires the approach of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Other contenders range from Pablo Perez, a popular state governor, to Maria Corina Machado, a congresswoman who is the most forceful in her criticisms of Chavez and his effort to bring socialism to Venezuela. Whoever wins the primary is likely to give Chavez the toughest electoral fight of his more than 13 years in office.
In the past, Chavez has capitalized on his opponents' mistakes. He saw his popularity grow after a failed 2002 coup, swept a 2005 congressional vote boycotted by the opposition and won re-election in 2006 with 63 percent of the vote.
Since then, though, his popularity has slipped as ills such as crime, inflation, and problem-riddled public services have taken a toll.
The once-fractured opposition has been emboldened by a strong showing in 2010 congressional elections, and has united to hold the primary vote at a time when polls show Chavez's adversaries have gained ground.
"The opposition has never been in better shape to defeat Chavez," said Angel Alvarez, director of the Institute of Political Studies at the Central University of Venezuela.
Polls show more than half of Venezuelans still approve of Chavez. But the new batch of opposition challengers are more popular than those who faced Chavez in 1998, 2000 and 2006, Alvarez said.
The top three contenders are all under 45 and represent a new generation of anti-Chavez leaders. After three terms as president, Chavez is less able to paint his opponents as part of the corrupt political establishment he once defeated.
Capriles comes from an upper middle-class family but has managed to make inroads among the poor, who have traditionally been Chavez's support base, by promoting programs including food and housing assistance as governor of Miranda state, which includes part of Caracas.
Capriles also largely avoids direct confrontation with Chavez, seldom mentioning the president by name even when he criticizes him.
At a news conference Tuesday, Capriles likened the campaign leading up to the Oct. 7 presidential vote to a race between "a horse that's tired," referring to Chavez, and another that is "filled with energy."
Capriles' leading rival according to the polls is Perez, the 42-year-old governor of western Zulia state and another fresh face in the opposition. Perez's potential advantages include support in the country's second largest state and the campaign experience of the established Social Christian and Democratic Action parties, which have backed him instead of politicians from within their own ranks.
Perez has taken the place of his political mentor Manuel Rosales, who was handily defeated by Chavez in the last vote in 2006. Rosales then fled to Peru in 2009 after officials filed corruption accusations that he said were trumped up for political reasons.
Perez too has avoided direct sparring with Chavez. The governor has rallied large crowds during the campaign, denouncing the government for squandering oil wealth while failing to fight joblessness, fix undersupplied hospitals or repair potholed roads.
Recent polls have shown Capriles with about 40 percent support among opposition voters, about 10 percentage points ahead of Perez. Capriles could also see a boost from his endorsement by rival Leopoldo Lopez, who bowed out of the race last month.
If voters favor a staunch anti-Chavez approach, that could help Congresswoman Machado, who has repeatedly challenged Chavez directly and has promoted her candidacy with the slogan "Vote hard." Machado has opposed Chavez's brand of socialism, saying she thinks Venezuela needs "popular capitalism."
Machado grabbed attention last month during Chavez's annual speech to the National Assembly, which ran for nine and a half hours, when she stood and asked: "How can you say you respect the private sector in Venezuela when you've dedicated yourself to expropriating, which is robbing?"
Chavez dismissed her comment, suggesting that Machado should first win the primary before trying to debate with him. "An eagle doesn't hunt a fly, congresswoman," Chavez said. That exchange has helped Machado stand out among the candidates, though prior polls showed her trailing.
Also running are two independents: Diego Arria, a 73-year-old former ambassador the United Nations, and Pablo Medina, a 64-year-old former leftist lawmaker.
All registered voters will be able to vote in Sunday's opposition primary regardless of party affiliation.
Chavez has said it's all the same to him who wins, calling the entire field of challengers pawns of the rich and allies of the U.S. government.
"The candidate, whoever it is, will be the candidate of capitalism, the candidate of imperialism," Chavez said in a Jan. 31 speech before the Supreme Court. "And this humble soldier will be the candidate of socialism."
Chavez says he has recovered after undergoing cancer surgery and chemotherapy last year, and he has appeared vigorous while speaking for his usual long stints on television.
Chavez has long described himself as a revolutionary on a crusade to change Venezuela. Now that he is the older incumbent, though, he warns that a change in leadership would only bring chaos.
"We're the only ones who can guarantee national stability ? stability, national peace," Chavez said. "That's good for the world."
Capriles responded on Tuesday by saying "I'm not an imperialist," and questioning U.S. authorities' stance toward Latin American immigrants and travelers.
Capriles also rejected Chavez's comments about stability, arguing that Chavez has rather brought instability with a 26 percent inflation rate and one of Latin America's highest murder rates.
"Chaos is what we have in Venezuela now," Carpiles said.
